Liverpool and Me: Love at first watch!

Liverpool Football Club. One of the most famous and successful football clubs in the world. And one of my greatest passions in life.

I still remember, I first watched Liverpool play in 2001, in an FA Cup final, when I was waiting in an airport lounge eagerly awaiting my first aeroplane ride. Understandably, I was palpable with excitement, and a little bit apprehensive of the forthcoming flight, considering that I was only 13 years old. I was pacing nervously on the mezzanine floor, trying to contain my burgeoning excitement, when I noticed a football match being relayed on a nearby TV set. Like a nail to a magnet, I was drawn to the action. The match was being played at a furious pace, and, as I was totally new to football at that time, I couldn't quite understand all of the rules of the sport. But even to an amateur like me, one thing was quite evident. The game was being played for high stakes.

Everyone knows what followed. Liverpool had won the game by the slimmest of margins, by scoring two late goals, to take the title. And, ironically, the man who was responsible for making me the Liverpool buff I am today, was Michael Owen, scorer of the two late goals which gave us the FA Cup that day( The 2001 final has since been rechristened the ' the Owen Final'). It was Owen who was my first football idol, the icon who opened my eyes to the beautiful game.

I cannot quite explain why, but that was the moment I knew I would be a Liverpool supporter. And that has been the case all these years, through the many ups and downs. Liverpool has been a part of my life for better or for worse, and I have enjoyed every minute of the ride so far. And long may it continue in the future.
